Target Rotator for the National Ignition Facility (NIF)
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the National Nuclear Security Administration operate the NIF to study high-energy-density physics. Research areas include nuclear fusion, materials science, and astrophysics.
The Roto-Lok® drive positions the target within the 10-meter diameter chamber in which as many as 192 high energy laser beams will ultimately converge. The design requirements included operation in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr.
Roto-Lok® is ideal for vacuum and cleanroom environments – no lubrication is required, and there is no particle shedding during operation.
